Purchasing a Tesla

We listed the 3 most common scenarios and processes to purchase a new or used Tesla.
The purpose of this document is purely informative and our suggestions are based on our extensive experience with the topic.
There are pros and cons to every scenario, therefore you should properly evaluate all criterias and go with the solution that you deem to be most convenient or appropriate based on your circumstances.

Purchasing options

Buying a new Tesla via  tesla.com

This is by far the most straightforward solution and definitely the best opportunity if you are hoping for a specific configuration with different exterior/interior color combinations, a larger set of rims, a tow-hook, specific autopilot package, etc.

Pros
You get to choose your configuration, and the process is easy
Possibly the cheapest option at this time for a new vehicle, considering the recent pricing updates

Cons
Although Tesla was able to ramp up production and keep up with demand, it still happens that delivery times range anywhere from a few weeks to a couple of months.

Visiting a local dealer

Without a doubt the fastest solution, whether you wish to purchase a new or used vehicle and get it into use almost immediately. In Estonia, the process is very fast, and handover may be done instantly via the  Estonian Transport Administration's online portal .

Pros
You can get your vehicle immediately without waiting times

Cons
Possibly the most expensive option with prices having 10%-15% extra margin on top

Purchasing second-hand from abroad (importing)

There are plenty of great options for used Teslas with low mileage across Europe, especially in Germany. Sites such as  AutoScout24 , are full of them. The prices are also usually lower than average compared to the rest of Europe and it's a great option for those who aren't picky about a used vehicle with a pre-set configuration.

However, there are several important details to consider and steps to follow:
You can have the vehicle shipped to the country of destination. The average from Germany to Estonia usually goes from 750€ to 1000€ (+VAT) per vehicle. We can help you get in touch with our trusted partners for a specific quote.
You can also drive it yourself, but it would require transit plates which cost 350€. In this case, you should also consider charging costs and adding ~1000 kilometers to your mileage.
You don't get to see and try the vehicle beforehand unless you travel to check it or find someone else trustworthy, or a professional service provider to do that on the spot (a lot of issues can be hidden, so we advise considering this point comprehensively)
You need to organize the technical inspection and registration in Estonia, appointments might take a few weeks to get and you could easily spend half of your day waiting at the counter for your turn.

Pros
Cheaper and relatively safe option if purchased directly from a dealer, the waiting times aren't too dramatic if everything organized at the right time (purchasing, shipping, registration)

Cons
Significant operational overhead and time compared to previous options
Finding a suitable vehicle online
Discussing details with the seller (emails, language barrier, etc.)
Organizing shipping
Requesting an appointment and filling details for pre-registration at the destination country, etc.

10 things to look out for when purchasing second-hand

Battery conditionCheck the battery condition of the Tesla, which can be found in the vehicle's history or diagnostic report. The battery capacity and health can affect the range and performance of the vehicle.
Mileage Like any other vehicle, the mileage of the Tesla will give you an idea of how much wear and tear the vehicle has been subjected to. A higher mileage could mean more maintenance and repairs.
AutopilotIf the Tesla you are considering has Autopilot features beyond the base package (standard autopilot), make sure to check if the version matches what you were promised.
Maintenance historyLook at the maintenance history of the Tesla, which can give you an idea of any issues the vehicle has had in the past and how well it has been maintained.
Interior condition: Inspect the interior of the car for any signs of wear and tear, such as rips, tears, or stains.
Exterior conditionCheck the exterior of the car for any dents, scratches, or other damage. If you're ordering 2nd hand from abroad, ask a third-party service provider to check the vehicle fully and certify their findings.
Charging Make sure the Tesla can charge correctly and that the charging port is in good condition.
Software updates Check that the car has received all the necessary software updates to ensure that it is operating at its best.
Tires Inspect the condition of the tires and make sure they are in good condition and meet the legal requirements.
Warranty Check if the Tesla is still under warranty or if the previous owner has purchased an extended warranty. This can give you peace of mind and protect you from any potential issues with the car.

About Tesla warranty

In the EU, Tesla offers a standard warranty for new vehicles that includes:

Vehicle Limited WarrantyThis covers the repair or replacement of any defective parts or workmanship for a period of 4 years or 80,000 kilometers (whichever comes first) for the Model S, Model X, and Model Y, and 4 years or 100,000 kilometers (whichever comes first) for the Model 3.
Battery and Drive Unit Limited WarrantyThis covers the repair or replacement of any defective battery or drive unit for a period of 8 years or 160,000 kilometers (whichever comes first) for the Model S, Model X, and Model 3, and 8 years or 192,000 kilometers (whichever comes first) for the Model Y.
It's important to note that the warranty for used or second-hand Tesla vehicles may vary depending on the age and mileage of the car, as well as whether or not it has been modified or repaired by a third-party service provider.

It's always a good idea to carefully review  the warranty terms and conditions  before purchasing a Tesla vehicle and to keep up with regular maintenance and service to ensure the car is kept in good condition.
